PUNS
Candidly speaking, Oz Books by L. Frank Baum were, in fact, not my favorite when I was a kid. I have always loved Alice books by Lewis Caroll and I still cherish them not only as my childhood books but also from a literary and linguistic angle. I studied parts of Alice books in my translation lectures at Istanbul University. All the puns Caroll wittily fits in the story are a delight to the mind when reading but a teaser when translating.
Some of my friends who have difficulty with my initial Ö, call me Oz and this is where the land of Oz allusion comes from. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the most famous book of the Oz Books and there is a misconception that Oz is the wizard. In fact, Oz is the name of the land.
Most Turkish names have a meaning and can be used as a common noun in speech and text. Özlem means yearning. I'm often called Öz by my friends, which means core, genuine, essense, essential and Özüm by family, which then means my core.
Dansöz is a Turkish word (originally a French loan word danseuse that creept into Turkish as dansöz and for instance Swedish as dansös) for belly dancer.
